      Alexa Moragas

Assistant Director of Special Programs, Outreach and Development for SEHCS

In four words, Alexa Moragas describes her job in the School of Education, Hospitality, and Continuing Studies (SEHCS) as "recruiting, marketing, outreach and communication."

Newly promoted to assistant director of special programs, outreach and development, Moragas' daily responsibilities are as robust as her job title. For SEHCS, she handles the marketing for new programs and events; develops consumer communications for alumni, current students, prospects, and faculty and staff; maintains the school's social media account; and recruits prospects.

"It's a lot of research," Moragas said, "knowing what's going on in the world current-event wise and with higher education nationwide. What are some other schools doing, and how can we stay competitive? I think the most important aspect of my job is making sure we're remaining relevant for the consumer – our prospects."

Moragas received a bachelor's degree in communications specializing in public relations from Villanova University. Prior to joining the Widener staff, she worked for a public relations firm handling media relations and social media for notable brands such as Disney, South Africa tourism, Mary Kay, Heathrow Airport, Skinnygirl Cocktails and more. A move from North Jersey to South Jersey in 2013, however, caused her to leave life in corporate public relations behind and embark on a new journey in higher education.

"I wanted to take my PR skills and apply them in an academic setting," Moragas said. "Having recently graduated, I think I missed the whole collegiate atmosphere. This job allowed me to combine both and brought some new challenges that I was ready to tackle."

Off campus, Moragas enjoys traveling, discovering new culinary treasures, spending time with her dogs and family in North Jersey, and all things Disney. Lately, however, her focus has been on planning her wedding, which is approaching within the coming weeks. "I'm a first generation American and come from a large Sicilian and Cuban family, and I am marrying a Greek, so there's going to be a lot of weaving of traditions. We're also incorporating subtle themes of Disney, like a vintage fairytale," Moragas said. "I've been dreaming of this day since I was a little girl!"
