The Widener University men’s cross country team celebrates its fourth straight MAC championship.

Led by first-place finisher Ernie Pitone, the Widener University men's cross country team captured its fourth straight Middle Atlantic Conference championship and seventh overall on Saturday morning at the Starry Athletic Complex on the campus of Messiah College.

The Pride finished with 82 points and narrowly edged out DeSales and Messiah, which had 85 points apiece, to claim the title. Misericordia (108) and Stevenson (117) completed the top five and were followed by Lebanon Valley (135), Eastern (166), King's (219), Wilkes (274), Alvernia (313), Lycoming (330), Arcadia (350), Hood (391), Delaware Valley (427), FDU-Florham (431) and Albright (471).

In addition to winning its fourth straight title, Widener also picked up three major awards at the end of the competition. Pitone, a senior, was named the MAC Runner of the Year for the third straight season after being named the MAC Rookie of the Year in 2013. Freshman Frank Livolsi was tabbed the MAC Rookie of the Year for being the top freshman finisher, while veteran mentor Vince Touey was named the MAC Coach of the Year.

Pitone led a group of 156 runners by punching in an 8,000-meter time of 25:31.8, which was more than 37 seconds faster than the rest of the field. Classmate Will McDermott placed second overall in 26:09.1, while Livolsi crossed the line in fifth with a mark of 26:48.9. Sophomores Ryan Rastatter and Thomas Rozinski notched times of 28:09 and 28:29.9, respectively, to complete the team's top five.

Widener will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 12 when it competes at the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships.
