Widener Dance Company Presents Their Annual Fall Recital Nov. 11

      Emma Irving, English, '18

      Widener Dance Company members

The members of Widener Dance Company (WDC) invite the Widener community, family and friends to their annual fall recital on Nov.11 at 7 p.m. and Nov. 12 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. in Alumni Auditorium. Tickets are $2 for Widener students with I.D. and $5 for non-Widener students, and are only available at the door.

The 100-plus members of the organization will showcase their talents in solo, duet and group performances in styles ranging from pointe to hip-hop, modern to Latin, and everything in between. All routines are student choreographed and performed.

The recital gives dancers more than an opportunity to share the routines they've been perfecting all semester with family and friends. "The dance classes I'm in are major performance pieces," said Olivia Weaver, a sophomore civil engineering major. "I'm really excited to see these pieces come to life on stage to show the deeper, more inspirational side to dance."

      A Large Dance Family

This is my 5th semester with the company, which I have the awesome privilege to help lead as vice president and jazz choreographer. I joined my first semester freshman year having danced at my hometown studio since I was 3; I was quickly welcomed into one of the biggest families on campus.

Senior biology major Natalie Pabon agrees. "WDC brought me more than friends; it brought me family. As a choreographer, dancer and E-board member, I have had the opportunity to meet people who share the same passion as me and perform with them. Because of WDC, I am a more outgoing and confident person."

The company is open to students from all majors and dance backgrounds, from lifetime dancers to those completely new to the stage. Because of this, I've made so many friends through WDC, many of whom I probably would not have met otherwise. We're so varied in our backgrounds and future goals, but our love of dance unites us all.

"I joined WDC because I wanted a place to escape from my studies and relax, all while staying fit and making new friends," Pabon said, "but now I don't know how I would've gotten through college without this club. WDC is a huge part of my best memories in college, and it will hold a piece of my heart forever."
