      Play of the Year

Sam Smith’s buzzer beater advances to final round for the 2017 GEICO Play of the Year.

Due to an excellent turnout of online voting by the Widener University community, a buzzer-beating three-point basket by junior men's basketball player Sam Smith, '18, a civil engineering major, has advanced to the final round of the national running for the 2017 GEICO Play of the Year.

Smith's play garnered the most fan votes in the opening week of voting, beating out other jaw-dropping plays from Washington University in St. Louis, Hiram College, and Ripon College.

Sixteen more exciting college basketball plays are in the process of matching up against each other with weekly voting taking place. Four additional plays will then advance to compete against Widener's buzzer beater by Smith in the final round for another week-long competition of voting through Facebook in March.

The overall winner will be shown and announced live during the GEICO Best of College Basketball special, which is scheduled to be aired on national television on March 25 at noon on CBS.

Stay tuned to learn more about the next round of voting on Facebook. Information regarding when and how to participate in voting will be announced on as well as through the athletic department's social media channels this month.
