      Faces of Widener

Theresa Sminkey, Faculty Secretary for Sciences

      Faculty Secretary for Sciences

For almost three decades, Theresa Sminkey has been a constant face at Widener University – first in the Office of the Registrar and then in the sciences department.

Sminkey, faculty secretary for sciences in the College of Arts & Sciences, will celebrate 27 years at the university in September. In her current role, she assists faculty and schedules classes for biology, chemistry, mathematics, computer science and other subjects.

“I do anything the professors in science need,” she said. “Every day is different, and I like it a lot.”

She also coordinates reservations for the Widener University Observatory and manages its Facebook page.

“I like that with the observatory I talk to a lot of people outside Widener,” she said. “The observatory attracts so many different people.”

Sminkey, a Folsom resident, started her tenure at Widener in the Office of the Registrar, where she helped with graduation, including ordering diplomas. She loved the excitement and buzz every May.

But, after 16 years in the Office of the Registrar, Sminkey sought a position in the sciences department. Her son, who at the time also worked at Widener, encouraged her to make the leap. In reflection, she said it has been a good fit.

“I’ve made a lot of friends here,” she said. “It’s a nice place to work.”

One of her favorite memories at Widener happened a few years ago when she got a request from a man who wanted to propose to his girlfriend in the university observatory.

“It’s the one thing that really sticks in my mind because it was so sweet,” she said. “Harry Augensen (director of the observatory) opened the observatory, and he proposed to his girlfriend up there.”

Off campus, Sminkey loves spending time with family. Two of her three children graduated from Widener, and she has five grandchildren, with one more on the way.
