Jayme Ruby, a Widener alumni, returned to the university as the program and community service coordinator in May 2017.

When Jayme Ruby officially began her career as program and community service coordinator for the Office of Civic Engagement, she was looking for a fresh start.

For nine years, Ruby devoted her life to early intervention and behavior therapy for children with special needs. While she loved the work she was doing and working with children, Ruby felt she needed a change.

Returning to Widener after graduating in 2008, she began interning with Assistant Dean Gretchen Mielke in March and then began in her current position in May 2017.

Ruby is the third member of her family to join the faculty at Widener. Her sister, Lindsey Ruby, is the director of University Center Administration on Widener's main campus and her mother, Karen Ruby, works in the Admissions Office at the Delaware Law School.

"I feel like Widener is a home. It's a comfort for me to be here," she said.

As program coordinator, Ruby runs the office events, as well as the Pride Service Site Leaders, and oversees the Global Leadership Living Learning Community, two programs devoted to engaging with the area and helping others. Meeting these students makes everything worth it for Ruby.

"It's so great to see how they love to serve and get involved in the community. Just seeing their passion is a heartwarming experience," she says.

At this time, Ruby and the Office of Civic Engagement are getting ready for a Hunger Banquet on Oct. 19, an event co-sponsored with International Student Services. The program gives students a look at what it means to live in poverty without access to an adequate food supply.

Ruby currently resides in Aston, Pa. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with family, friends, and her two dogs. Lately, her spare time has been spent planning her wedding, which is less than a month away.
