Commonwealth Law Professor Amanda Smith is the director of academic success

Even when she was in law school, Professor Amanda Smith knew she always wanted to teach.

Smith, who holds the title of professor of legal methods and director of academic success, is in her 11th year of teaching at Widener Law Commonwealth.

“I work with students in ways to make sure they can achieve full academic success,” she said.

This may include reviewing study methods, providing and reviewing legal references and resources and even dealing with issues in a student’s life that may be getting in the way of their success.

Prior to coming to Widener Law Commonwealth, Smith clerked with the Honorable Sandra Newman in the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, and also as a deputy attorney general with the civil litigation section of the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office.

“The most rewarding part of my job is watching the transformation the students go through and watching them become competent and successful lawyers,” she said. “It is amazing to watch that transformation.”

A typical day for Smith includes getting ready for class, holding office hours and providing feedback to students.

“The key to success for students is to connect with them,” she said. “I’m fortunate to have the opportunity to get to know the students very well, so if there is a problem they are comfortable and come to talk to me. I really like that aspect of my job.”

Outside of teaching, Smith enjoys reading, Zumba, walking and spending time with her 10-year old daughter Mackenzie. She is a graduate of Dickinson Law School and is originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
