CHEMICAL ENGINEERING

Using the science of chemistry and the disciplines of engineering and mathematics, chemical engineers solve societal problems by inventing and producing materials and by finding more efficient processing methods.  Chemical engineers are the key professionals involved in the production of fuels, food, pharmaceuticals, clean water, and the modern materials used in electronics, apparel, and construction.  Chemical engineers are responsible for the recovery and management of raw materials found on land, in the oceans, and in space.  Chemical engineers design processes, equipment, plant-testing procedures, evaluation techniques, and standards in all areas of chemical production, as well as with pharmaceuticals and biotechnology.

Graduates from the chemical engineering program at Widener work for chemical, biochemical, pharmaceutical, semiconductor, pulp and paper, polymer, contracting and consulting firms, and the government.  Many graduates continue on to graduate school.

The Chemical Engineering program provides:

  • a basis in the natural and engineering sciences, the humanities, and the social sciences

  • a required introduction to several subdisciplines within civil engineering including environmental, structural, geotechnical, and transportation engineering

  • an opportunity to participate in our Co-op Program

  • an opportunity to specialize in one of the subdisciplines through senior year elective courses
