Here, you'll learn to lead and solve problems facing urban and suburban communities. Our urban studies certificate gives you the flexibility to take graduate courses focused on urban history and theory, public policy, environments, and sustainability. Our professors will introduce you to an array of disciplines, perspectives, and methodologies to deepen your appreciation for urban issues and ensure you have the skills to find creative solutions. We know you’ll become ready to contribute meaningfully to your community in various roles, including urban or community planning and governance. By the end, you’ll be ahead of the game – whether you choose to pursue a master’s degree or use your certificate to advance in your career.
The urban studies graduate certificate is a good option for busy, working adults to explore graduate study without yet making a full commitment to a longer degree program.
The certificate ensures students develop a theoretical, historical, and contemporary understanding of urban communities and the issues they face. The courses will weave together multiple disciplines to create a full picture of the urban environment.
The certificate requires the completion of four, three-credit courses with a grade of B or better in three years or less. The certificate courses are also offered at a reduced tuition rate, making this a cost-effective way to start your graduate degree.
Complete the certificate in urban studies and then easily transition to one of Widener University's master's programs, including a master's of public administration.
The transition is simple; students enrolled in the certificate will only have to complete a short application and will have all their certificate courses applied to the master's degree.
Applicants must hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.
Complete our simple, short online application. Write a brief statement describing reasons and expectations for study in this program.
Within a week of our receipt of your official college transcript and completed application, you will receive notification regarding admission. After making a deposit of $100 that will be applied to your tuition and fees, you will receive a code that will allow you to enroll in the graduate certificate program and make course selections for the upcoming semester.
At Widener, you'll learn from professors who are either working professionals or are experts practicing in the field. They'll make you the priority and help you build a network that will follow you long after graduation.
