Donny Jackson, Emmy Award winning executive producer and director of CNN’s documentary series, United Shades of America with W. Kamau Bell, will visit Widener to give his presentation, “The Reality of Documentary Television.”

A former clinical professor at Widener University’s Institute for Graduate Clinical Psychology, and a staple of the television and poetry communities for nearly 2 decades, Donny Jackson also holds a doctorate in clinical psychology, and is the multiple Emmy-winning Executive Producer and Director of CNN’s documentary series, United Shades of America with W. Kamau Bell. A veteran showrunner in documentary television, including Facebook Diaries, A&E’s Teach, Inside the Label for BET, and a Netflix series set in Compton currently in production, Dr. Jackson is also an NAACP Image Award winner for his producing duties on TV One’s music documentary series, Unsung.

As a spoken word artist, Dr. Jackson has featured at dozens of venues throughout the United States, including Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, throughout California, the legendary Nuyorican Poets Café, and, internationally, Toronto, Canada. In print media, Dr. Jackson’s poetry has been featured in multiple anthologies, including: The Border Crossed Us (An Anthology to End Apartheid), Skin to Skin: A Publication for Women of the LBGTQ Community, and Incandescent Mind (The Mental Health Issue), La Bloga Online Floricanto’s Best Poems of 2015 and -2017, and the coming Garden of Black Joy (Spring 2019). His work as a poet explores subjects in and hidden from the headlines such as: the U.S./Mexico border wall, the Boko Haram kidnappings, Cyntoia Brown, Dajerria Becton, Flint, Michigan, Habtom Zerham, Jordan Edwards, Junot Diaz, Kalief Browder, Karyn Washington, Kerrice Lewis, Megan Williams, the Mogadishu, Somalia and Yola, Nigeria bombings, Nia Wilson, Sandra Bland, Shannan Gilbert, Tamir Rice, Terrence Crutcher, Tyshawn Lee, and the Yazidis. On record, he is a featured poet on Tshaka Campbell’s spoken word album, Skin, as well as with Philadelphia poet Ursula Rucker on Vancouver artist Jaidene Veda’s acclaimed deep house album, Wanderlust. Dr. Jackson also appears in multiple spoken word videos for Da Poetry Lounge, All Def Digital, Commoners & Kings, and Word of Art. His one-man, multi-character spoken word play, One Man Shown, which debuted in 2013, will return to Los Angeles in the spring of 2020.

On February 22, 2020, Dr. Jackson will celebrate the release of his debut poetry collection, “boy."
