Started in 1988, Widener's Honors Program in General Education brings together highly motivated undergraduate students and dedicated faculty who share a curiosity about the world and a sense of the adventure of discovery. The program stimulates and encourages the highest level of intellectual activity.
The Honors Program currently has more than 200 members who represent each of the schools and colleges on Widener's Main Campus. Since honors courses count towards the General Education requirement for all students, it is still possible for students with demanding majors to participate.
Widener has several majors on campus that offer discipline-based honors. The Honors Program Director works closely with each of these discipline-based programs to facilitate student success.
The School of Nursing and the School of Business Administration both offer honors degrees, as does the hIstory major in the College of Arts and Sciences. Students who wish to complete requirements within these major areas and within the General Education curriculum can easily do so.
Admission Requirements
High school students who apply to Widener are invited to participate in the Honors Program based on SAT scores and high school records. Traditionally, students who are in the top ten percent of their graduating class, have SAT scores of 1200 or higher, and have cumulative grade point averages of 3.4 or higher are invited to participate.
Transfer students can join the honors program as long as they still have general education courses left to complete in their curriculum.
Students displaying academic excellence are also invited for admission to the program after the first or second semester of their freshman year at Widener.
