Wolfgram Memorial Library presents a Community Book Discussion for Standing at the Edge by Joan Halifax.
Standing at the Edge, by Joan Halifax, examines 5 psychological states—altruism, empathy, integrity, respect, ad engagement—that are vital to a rich connected existence. Halifax also explores how falling off "the edge" of these states can lead to burnout, psychological stress, and moral suffering.
Our discussion will focus on chapter 5 —Engagement—as it relates most strongly to the work faculty and staff do at Widener. Even if you'd like to talk about other chapters, or don't have time to read at all, please come and discuss the ways we can manage to remain balanced and emotionally healthy during these destabilizing, frightening times. This reading group is a forum for discussion and intergroup dialogue, with the goal of improving our individual understanding of cultures, identities, histories, and communities. We hope that this increased interpersonal and community awareness will help in building and supporting an inclusive campus culture.
