Program Overview

Customize your master's degree to meet your needs in the rapidly growing industry of electrical engineering. At Widener, faculty understand the importance of being on the forefront in advancing products and services through specialized coursework.   

Here, you'll benefit from a supportive environment and a flexible curriculum. All graduate classes are offered in the evening, so that you can continue to work while pursuing your degree. Some classes are also available to stream online.

If you'd like to get more involved with research or teaching, graduate assistantships are available.

Program Options

You can earn a master's of science in electrical engineering with or without a thesis. The program is tailored to meet the needs of your career.

  • Thesis option: You will take 24 credits of classroom study and complete a 6-credit thesis. The classroom study includes core engineering courses as well as technical electives  in your specialization of choice –modern communication or hardware and software.
  • Non-thesis option: The 6-credit thesis is replaced with technical electives.

You can build additional knowledge in a second area of engineering and advance your graduate-level work by pursuing a dual specialization degree. Dual specialization is available within all engineering tracks, including engineering management.

Jointly offered by the School of Engineering and School of Business Administration, this dual degree program gives you the inside track to emerging engineering leadership by offering technical training paired with advanced study in business and management.

In order to pursue this dual degree, you must apply and be accepted to both degree programs.

Admissions Requirements

  • Candidates must hold a bachelor's of science degree in engineering from an EAC/ABET-accredited undergraduate program. Candidates who hold undergraduate degrees in closely related areas are also considered.
  • Candidates should hold a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.8 (based on a 4.0 system).
  • The GRE is required of all full-time applicants, except those in the 4+ 1 program, and although the GRE is optional for part-time students, it may be helpful in the evaluation of credentials. The Quantitative Score on the GRE should be in the top 40% as noted on the score results.

Deadlines

The School of Engineering graduate program reviews applications on a rolling admission basis, but suggests 4 weeks prior to the start of a semester as a tentative deadline for application, to allow for any follow-up or additional information.

Various types of financial support are available to graduate students, like you, through university-based scholarship and graduate assistantship programs and the generosity of our university donors.

Graduate Assistantships

You can participate in research projects or assist faculty in executing teaching assignments for a semester as part of a graduate assistantship.

Graduate students who accept the assistantship may not be employed elsewhere without prior consent of the advisor and director for graduate programs.

The assistantship generally requires 20 hours of service a week and the tuition reimbursement is considered taxable income in accordance with current Internal Revenue Service regulations.

Anniversary Scholarship

The Anniversary Scholarship was created during the school's 150th anniversary to celebrate the long history of excellence in engineering education at Widener by supporting merit-based graduate scholarships for thesis students. The fund began with contributions from faculty and staff, and has grown with contributions from alumni and university donors. It's not a traditional scholarship and will be awarded at the end of the year.

The electrical engineering department provides an extensive concentration on modern communications. Since communication technology is constantly changing, with new mechanisms being created each year, it is imperative for electrical engineers to have a solid understanding of modern devices. You can also choose to specialize in hardware or software with courses in circuit design and computer structures.

Graduate classes meet one night per week and are streamed over the Internet live and archived for later viewing. This gives you a direct connection to faculty, and allows you to stay up to date with coursework while traveling or when unexpected work conflicts arise.
