View and download the drive-through ceremony directional map.

Campus street closures associated with commencement and ongoing PennDOT construction has the Edgmont Avenue bridge over I-95 out of service. We recommend following these routes to reach the starting point:

From the south:

Travel north on I-95 to exit 6 and go straight through the traffic light at Edgmont Avenue and continue straight along E. 12th Street. Turn left onto Melrose Avenue and continue straight to the starting point at E. 17th Street.

From Philadelphia and points east:

Travel south on I-95 to exit 8 for Ridley Park. Bear right at the exit onto Stewart Avenue, then turn left at the light onto Chester Pike/Rte. 13. Chester Pike becomes Morton Avenue. Turn right onto Melrose Avenue and continue straight to the starting point at E. 17th Street.

From northern and western Pennsylvania:

Follow the Pennsylvania Turnpike to Exit 333, I-476. Take I-476 south to exit 1, MacDade Boulevard. Keep right to take the MacDade Boulevard West ramp and merge onto MacDade Boulevard, which becomes E. 22nd Street. Turn left onto Melrose Avenue and continue straight to the starting point at E. 17th Street.

Designated Meet Up Lot:

Graduates who have guests arriving in a separate vehicle and need space to “meet up” before getting in the drive-through ceremony procession should meet their guests in the parking lot outside the Pride Recreation Center at the bottom of E. 17th Street. Once both vehicles are ready to move together they can proceed up E. 17th Street to the starting point at Melrose Avenue.

Please do not arrive for meet up more than 15 minutes prior to the graduate’s arrival window.

Starting Point and Check-in:

With the graduate in the back seat on the drivers’ side of the lead vehicle, come to the starting point within your assigned arrival window. Do not be early.

Campus Safety officers and event volunteers will guide you through the drive-through route, which will move along 17th Street (this street will operate in a one-way direction the reverse of normal), and turn into the ACN/Freedom Hall parking lot for check-in. Graduates will show their GradPass and guest tickets and receive a card for their vehicle dashboards identifying them as graduation vehicles.

After check in, vehicles will turn left back onto E. 17th Street, turn left onto Walnut Street (which will be open to regular traffic) and head toward E. 14th Street. Campus Safety officers will allow all vehicles with a graduation card on their dashboard to turn left onto E. 14th Street (which will be closed to normal traffic to accommodate commencement) and proceed to the ceremony area.

Approaching Old Main, vehicles will follow signs to stop so the graduate may exit their vehicle and walk toward the platform to process across the stage. Guests will remain in the vehicles, which will then move to the viewing area by the stage, and stop to watch their graduate. The graduates will pose for a professional photograph after crossing the stage, then re-enter their vehicle, which will continue down E. 14th Street to Melrose Avenue and depart campus.

All drive-through ceremony participants must remain in their vehicles for the entire experience, except the graduates who will exit to cross the stage in front of Old Main.

Rest rooms will be available at the Pride Recreation Center.

A flower, T-shirt, and teddy bear sales tent will be set up along the drive-through route before the check-in point. Pre-ordered items will be delivered to your vehicle and purchases may be made from your vehicle. Graduates and guests will not be permitted to exit their vehicles to shop.

All graduates and guests must wear masks for the entire experience.

Please do not arrive early. Rest assured there will be ample parking and seating, and the timing flow on our multi-ceremony schedule may create confusion and complications for early birds! Assigned arrival times will give you adequate time to park, check in and be seated.

A small tent with Campus Safety offers and volunteers will be set up in each parking area to inform guests when it is time to proceed from the lot to the welcome tent on Memorial Field.

All graduates and their guests will check in at the welcome tent. Be prepared with your GradPass and guest tickets, either printed or available for digital scan. Information and services for those with pre-registered* ADA or special accessibility needs will also be managed at the welcome tent.

Approximately 15 minutes before the start of the ceremony, guests will move from the welcome tent to the ceremony tent as graduates are lined up for their procession. Guest seating will be socially distanced in groups of two.

*If you did not pre-register ADA accommodation requests for yourself and/or your guests during the RSVP process in Marching Order, please contact the Accessibilities Office at disabilities@widener.edu or 610-499-1266. We will make every attempt to meet the needs of late requests as space, time, and availability allow.

Graduates will line up around the back and side of Alumni Auditorium and will process* through the Bown Garden, under the dome, through the rear of the ceremony tent, and up the center aisle.

Graduates will be seated in socially distanced rows at the front of the tent. With GradPass in hand, they will cross the stage during the ceremony to hear their name and degree(s) announced and an individual professional photo will be taken after they receive their symbolic diploma tube on stage.

The ceremony should last approximately 45 minutes. Graduates will recess the tent first, following guidance from event volunteers. Guests will depart after the graduates and follow the same exit route. Everyone will be directed toward their parking zone, where guests and graduates may reunite and depart campus.

*Weather permitting. In the event of inclement weather, graduates will be directed to their seats from the welcome tent.

Rest rooms will be available in Freedom Hall, Alumni Auditorium, and Founders Hall.

Flowers, T-shirts and teddy bears will be available for purchase in the welcome tent. Pre-ordered items will be available there for pickup.

All graduates and guests must wear masks at all times.

To help maintain consistent mask wearing, consumption of food and beverage is not permitted on-site unless medically necessary.
