Program Overview

In our finance program, you will develop a resume distinguished by career-specific learning experiences. You’ll analyze real-time data and manage an investment portfolio in our state-of-the-art finance lab. You'll earn certifications and prepare for licensing exams that will signal to employers that you're ready for the financial industry. And, you’ll be mentored by industry insiders who can connect you with countless internships and co-ops with finance, wealth management, and financial planning companies. These opportunities ensure that when you graduate, you won’t be just starting your career – you’ll be continuing the work you’ve been doing all along.

The School of Business Administration is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). This professional accreditation places Widener among the top one-third of college business schools in the U.S. and Europe.

Program Options

Finance majors can choose the track that fits their career path:

  • Loading... - The traditional finance track prepares students for professional positions with financial institutions, finance departments of business enterprises, and asset management companies. 
  • Loading... - The financial planning track is appropriate for students who wish to start their own financial planning business or work in the broad area of financial services. This track is designed so that graduates will be immediately eligible to sit for the Certified Financial Planner (CFP ®) exam.

Both tracks also prepare students to take the Series 65 exam, designed to qualify candidates as investment adviser representatives.

Every business decision has financial implications. Finance majors will learn how to become strategic leaders in a wide range of positions, from financial analysts and portfolio managers to financial advisors and risk managers.

Learning Goals & Objectives

Knowledge

SBA students will demonstrate the knowledge that is appropriate to the business discipline.

a) Core business disciplines – Students will demonstrate proficiency in accounting, business law, economics, finance, information systems, international business, management, marketing, operations, and quantitative analysis.

Leadership

SBA students will apply leadership skills in the development of business decisions.

a) Collaboration – Through teamwork, students will demonstrate the ability to collaborate with others to accomplish tasks that lead to decisions.

b) Communication of ideas – Students will demonstrate the ability to prepare and deliver business information with regard to audience and setting.

Application of Concepts and Technologies

SBA students will be competent in the application of core business concepts and technologies.

a) Critical thinking – Through course assignments, students will demonstrate the ability to effectively incorporate both qualitative and quantitative methods in the development of business solutions.

b) Technology – Students will use the appropriate technology in the analysis and development of business solutions.

Social Responsibility

SBA students will utilize social responsibility principles in decision making.

a) Diversity and Multicultural Issues - Students recognize the complexity and interconnectedness of diverse or international groups of businesses, people, and societies through participation in exercises designed to showcase these issues.

b) Ethics and Social Awareness Issues - Students will recognize the ethical, social, and environmental impact of business decisions through participation in exercises designed to showcase these issues.

Prepare for rapid career growth by completing two degrees in five years. When you graduate, you’ll receive a bachelor’s degree in business analytics and a master’s degree in one of several graduate programs in the School of Business Administration.

Joining a select group of universities worldwide, Widener has been designated as a Bloomberg Experiential Learning Partner, incorporating Bloomberg technology into the curriculum and providing students with hands-on experience through the use of real-time investment data, analytical tools, and trading simulations.  

Widener's Finance Lab features the same advanced technology and programs professional asset managers and investors use in the real-world.

In this lab, finance students can complete the Bloomberg Market Concepts 8-hour, self-paced e-learning course and earn a Bloomberg Certificate, which shows future employers that they have mastered the Bloomberg system when it comes to analyzing data.

Finance majors are required to complete an internship or co-op. In partnership with the Office of Career Design and Development, explore the opportunity to complete 12 months of full-time, paid co-op work and still complete your degree in four years.

Or, we can connect you with an internship that interests you. Finance students recently interned with JPMorgan Chase, DuPont, Boeing, FDIC, Merrill Lynch and more. You'll apply what you've learned in class to get your foot in the door for future jobs.

Widener's unique Executives in Residence program in the School of Business Administration brings industry leaders to campus and provides students with career mentorship and networking opportunities with experts in the field.

You'll meet business leaders, like Tony Miller, executive vice president and chief administrative officer at Janney, and Carl G. Gordinier, managing director and wealth management advisor at Merrill Lynch.

Network in Money Club

Join Widener's Money Club to connect with industry insiders and other students on campus. Money Club organizes a variety of activities each semester, including:

  • Networking events with alumni and advisory board members
  • Career-building events with industry professionals
  • Trips to major financial institutions and locations
  • Civic engagement activities, such as food drives and other volunteer activities
  • The Money Club is also responsible for running the Student-Managed Investment Fund.

Manage an Investment Fund

Learn to analyze stocks and manage an investment portfolio - and you'll be a step ahead when you hit the job market.

Our Student-Managed Investment Fund offers the opportunity for finance majors and other members of the on-campus Money Club to practice investment strategies with guidance from an advisory board of professionals from leading financial firms, many of whom are Widener alumni. The fund began as a $500,000 allocation from the university, but has grown significantly - thanks to finance majors just like you.
