School of Business Administration Dean and Professor of Management Anthony Wheeler co-authored a newly published book, titled "HR Without People? Industrial Evolution in the Age of Automation, AI, and Machine Learning (Future of Work)". 

Wheeler co-authored the book with M. Ronald Buckley, the JC Penney Company Chair of Business Leadership and a Professor of Management and Psychology at the University of Oklahoma.

The book traces provocative and challenging timelines for future developments in ten, thirty and fifty years' time, to interrogate how modern human resources practices need to respond to far reaching technological and industrial change. As artificial intelligence and machine learning practices grow, entire industries and jobs could become more automated or cease to exist altogether. 

Focusing on the role these technologies are playing in changing the human resources profession and how they could and should develop industry practices in the future, Wheeler and Buckley explored how this profession has a vital role in responding to these changes and how it can adapt to meet the new challenges faced by both employers and employees.

The Board of Directors for the International Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education (ICHRIE) recently recognized Professor Jeff Lolli’s work with the Northeast/North America (NENA) Federation chapter of ICHRIE with the McCool Breakthrough Award. The McCool Breakthrough Award honors the spirit of astronaut Willie McCool and is given to an individual, group, program, school, college, association, or corporation that has made a significant breakthrough or introduced a unique approach in the spirit of ICHRIE’s mission. 

The award recognized the Eta Sigma Delta (ESD) Honor Society Board of Governors and Lolli as co-chair for creating a first ever virtual conference for ESD honor society students. The first-of-its-kind conference theme was ‘Hospitality Strong: Resetting the Industry’ and focused on professional development for students, as well as education on how the decimated hospitality and tourism industry is resilient and how the industry pivoted during the pandemic.

The Widener University Faculty Scholarship, an endowment funded primarily by faculty donations, recognizes the outstanding academic achievements of undergraduate students in and outside the classroom. Professor Jeffrey Lolli recently co-authored an article, entitled 'Evaluating the Use of Sense of Place as a Business Strategy in the Marketing and Promotion of Craft Beverage Tourism,' in the Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Cases. The article highlighted the use sense of place as a business strategy in the marketing and promotion of craft beverage tourism for one New Jersey brewery through the lens of the Multidisciplinary Framework for Place-Conscious Education. The case will help educate students/future craft beverage entrepreneurs/educators on the challenges of an increasingly competitive craft beverage business environment.

Michael Rosko, professor emeritus of health care management, published a book chapter, “Profitability of Rural Hospitals: An Analysis of Government Payment Policies,” in Advances in Healthcare Management, Volume 19, A Focus on Consumerism and Profitability. The book was edited by Jennifer Hefner and Mona Al-Amin and published by Emerald Publishing 2020 Bingley, UK.

Widener School of Business Administration students Lambert Thomas, Angelica Calel, and Kyle Jones represented Widener University at the Drexel University FIC3 Fraud and Internal Control Case Competition. Thomas' team placed third, and Calel and Jones' team placed fourth during the competition.

On Feb. 12, seven student teams virtually competed in analyzing a real-life inspired fraud and internal controls case and then presented their comprehensive detection, prevention and deterrence plans to a panel of judges. Each team had three and a half hours to review the case and critical information provided, formulate their response to the case questions and develop a PowerPoint-based presentation.

Associate Professor Jeff Lolli has been named to the founding editorial board of the International Journal of Gaming, Hospitality, and Tourism, a peer-reviewed, open-access journal for members of the gaming, hospitality, tourism, and events management community.

In addition, Lolli had two papers published in January: ‘Online hotel reviews: Factors influencing how customers perceive their credibility and the likelihood of customer adoption,’ which was published in the Journal of Applied Marketing Analytics, and ‘The Influence of Background Sounds, Physical Sounds, and Managers’ Proactive Customer Service Regarding Situational Sounds on Customer Satisfaction in the Restaurant Industry,’ which was co-authored by Department Head of Management Brian Larson and published in the Journal of Small Business Strategy.

Associate Professor of Management Kerri Crowne Brannen recently published the article “Does National Culture Influence Peer Evaluations on Global Virtual Teams?” in the Journal of Teaching in International Business. Research for her timely article indicated that cultural variables had a weak effect on peer assessment of performance, and the most influential variable on performance was English language ability. Brennan teaches in the School of Business Administration.

Associate Professor Kerri Crowne Brannen received the Outstanding Researcher Award at the 2020 Faculty Awards event. The honor recognizes a faculty member who has exhibited distinction in scholarly work and has made a significant contribution through research to advancing the profession or discipline and the university’s mission. Brannen is a prolific researcher who has published 10 articles in a variety of highly-ranked journals over the last five years. She is an internationally recognized scholar and some of her work addresses the role of cultural and emotional intelligences on transformational leadership, which in turn drives change in the workplace. She has also explored her field through award-winning research linked to her use of high-impact teaching practices, which has enriched the education of Widener’s business majors. Much of her research has been carried out collaboratively with colleagues at Widener and elsewhere. She is also Co-Editor-in-Chief of Organizational Management Journal.

Several faculty in the School of Business Administration, including Associate Professor Kerri Crowne Brannen, Assistant Professor Danielle Durant, Assistant Professor Yamuna Baburaj, Professor Donna McCloskey, and Assistant Dean Lou Anne Vike, as well as Peter Hornberger and Maureen Brown, co-authored an article in the November 2020 issue of the International Journal of Management Education. The article, titled "A program for embedding career activities in multiple core business courses," details a Widener program for embedding career-preparedness into the undergraduate business curriculum.

The program ensures every student in the School of Business Administration is provided with adequate career-preparedness training, and the school is well-positioned to achieve high job placement rates.

Dr. Yamuna Baburaj, assistant professor of management, recently co-authored two published articles. The article, titled "How to best utilize star employees," was published in the April-June 2020 issue of Organizational Dynamics. The paper discusses some of the challenges associated with star employee management and proposes strategies for managing this form of specialized human capital in any organization.

Another article, titled "Complementary Product Categorization and its Influence on the Make, Buy, and Ally Decision: An Exploratory Study," was accepted in March 2020 and published in the International Journal of Innovation Management. The paper examines the significance of a categorization of product complementarity on the firm governance decision.

Dr. Brian Larson, professor and department head of management, and Dr. Yamuna Baburaj, assistant professor of management, co-authored an article in the May 2020 issue of the Journal of International Business Disciplines. The article, titled "Alternative Multi-mode International Learning: A Model Establishing Collaboration," proposes a set of activities to enhance cross-cultural learning opportunities as a viable alternative to study abroad.

School of Business Administration Professor Yvonne Antonucci, Associate Professor Annetta Fortune, and Mathias Kirchmer of BPM-D published an article in the Business Process Management Journal in July 2020. The article, titled "An examination of associations between business process management capabilities and the benefits of digitalization: all capabilities are not equal," examined the associations of BPM capabilities across direct and indirect digitalization benefits and extended prior research examining the value of BPM capabilities in organizations.

Assistant Professor of Marketing Dan Li co-authored an article, titled "The role of psychological ownership in consumer happiness," in the Journal of Consumer Marketing. The article, published on June 10, showed that consumers feel happier when they have a higher psychological ownership over an item after consumption. Furthermore, consumers anticipate greater happiness from a product before consumption due to increased psychological ownership through customization.

Assistant Professor Danielle Durant co-authored an article, titled "Adoption of electronic hand hygiene monitoring systems in New York state hospitals and the associated impact on hospital-acquired C. difficile infection rates," with the Healthcare Association of New York State's Quality, Advocacy and Research Initiatives division. The piece, published in the American Journal of Infection Control, found that the proliferation of electronic hand hygiene monitoring systems is low in New York State acute care hospitals and its impact on hand hygiene compliance and infection rates is questionable. Putting technology aside, strong hand hygiene culture seems essential for high compliance.

Assistant Professor of Marketing Dan Li was featured in a video for the SAGE Research Methods Video Collection on Market Research Methods. The video focuses on her research on consumer happiness using experimental design and was filmed at the Winter American Marketing Association conference.

Dr. Joseph Hargadon, professor of accounting, co-authored an article entitled "Dual Certification: It Can Be Done" in the August 2019 issue of Strategic Finance. The article prescribes a unique study plan whereby accounting majors can design their undergraduate curriculum to pass both the Uniform Certified Public Accountant (CPA) examination and the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) examination within six months after graduation. The article has been cited and reprinted by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) as a recruiting tool to increase awareness of the benefits to students for joining the IMA. He also presented a one-hour IMA Inside Talk Faculty Friday webinar with his co-author, Dr. Lori Fuller, on Oct. 25. Finally, DePaul University School of Accountancy adopted the study program prescribed in this article.
